I always thought the cut-off times were the same for all Ironman races. After looking at each race, I can say that I was wrong.

The time limits for most Ironman races are 2h20min for the swim, 10h30min until the end of the bike, and 17 hours for the entire race. If a triathlete does not finish within those cut-off times, he will receive a DNF (Did Not Finish).

It is important to know that those times can change drastically depending on the race location.

IRONMAN COUNTDOWN EXPLANATION

Each triathlete will get a chip assigned to him during the check-in. Thanks to that chip, the times are individual to each triathlete.

Once you cross the first mat at the swim entrance, your countdown starts. You will see a lot of those time mats during the entire race.

IRONMAN SWIM CUT-OFF

Almost all Ironman races have a 2h 20min swim cut-off based on the triathlete’s chip time. Exceeding this time will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish).

You would need to swim the 2.4 mi or 3.8 km at a slower pace than 3:41 min/100m to be outside the cut-off time. If that seems totally doable for you, you might be interested in this article: Average Swim Times For An Ironman

IRONMAN BIKE CUT-OFF

Most Ironman races have a 10h 30 min cut-off time for the bike. This time limit is based on the triathlete’s own chip time and consists of the swim time, transition 1, and the entire bike portion. Exceeding this time will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish).

If we consider a triathlete who just finished the swim on time and spent roughly 10 min in the first transition (an average triathlete spends 8min 30s per transition), it lets him 8 hours for covering the 112 mi or 180km of the bike section. It means that any average speed higher than 14 mph or 22.5 km/h will be enough for finishing within the time limit.

IRONMAN RUN CUT-OFF

Most of the Ironman races have a 17h cut-off time. This time limit is based on the triathlete’s own chip time and consists of the entire race: swim, transition 1, bike, transition 2, and run. Exceeding this time will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish).

If we consider a triathlete who barely made the bike cut-off and needed 10 min for the transition 2, it lets him 6h 20 min to cover the marathon. Completing the run within the cut-off requires a pace faster than 14:30 min/mi or 9:00 min/km.
